VICENTE GANDIA:
Vicente Gandia was born in Valencia, Spain in 1935. He moved to Mexico in 1951 and during that same year enrolled in the School of Architecture at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico. He discontinued his studies after two years in order to dedicate himself entirely to painting thereafter working exclusively as an artist. Gandia is primarily self-taught, focusing on the beauty of still life and landscape painting. His style has been described as Poetic Realism. His work does not make any major breaks with the art traditions of Europe, but does add new twists and even some elements that contradict the aesthetics of his main later influences of Cézanne and Matisse.
Gandia is considered a national treasure in his adopted country of Mexico. His work has been well collected in Latin America for decades. Prominent museums and major corporations worldwide have recognized this exceptional talent and added his paintings to their collections.
BSI standards
He held numerous one-man shows at venues abroad, such as the Columbia Museum of Art, in 1968; the Chastenet European Center, London, 1976, the Kimberley Gallery, Washington, 1987; the Galerie du Palais de la Culture, Algiers, 1991, the Museo Espanol de Arte Contemporaneo in Madrid, 1993; David Findlay Gallery 2002. He had an individual exhibition in 1988 in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (Fine Arts Palace), and participated in over 100 group exhibitions in Mexico, the USA, Canada, Israel, Argentina and Europe.
He died in 2009 at age 74.
